Claude Guillot served as a volunteer in a military company in France in the late eighteenth century.

Charles W. Hall was born presumably in England and was a member of the 93rd Derbyshire Regiment. On 11 December 1861, he boarded the steamer H.M.S. Windsor in Dublin, Ireland and set sail for Liverpool. On 12 December 1861, Hall transferred and served aboard H.M.S. Australasian, another steamer, and along with a regiment of 850 and an artillery of 270, set sail for Canada. 1 February 1862 marked Hall's arrival in Hamilton, Ontario.

The City of Hamilton's Act of Incorporation in 1847 allowed for the appointment of a Chief Constable and an unlimited number of sub-constables. Three were initially appointed. Over the years as the population grew, so did the police force. In 1872 responsibility for the force was transferred to a Board of Police Commissioners. In 1973 the Hamilton Police Force was replaced by the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Police.

The Real Estate Board in Hamilton, Ont. received its official letters patent in 1921. It is a non-profit organization, responsible to its members who are brokers and realtors. There is a voluntary board of directors. The main service that the Board provides to its members is to provide a listing service of properties for sale.

Hamilton Steel Wheel Company Limited was incorporated in 1916 by letter patent under the first part of the Companies Act with its head office in Hamilton, Ontario. Both certificates are stamped "cancelled". It was a subsidiary of Dominion Foundries and Steel Limited. The two merged in 1917.

The Hamilton and Scourge were two wooden schooners which sank in Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. Their location on the lake bottom was discovered in 1975. In 1981 the City of Hamilton created the Hamilton-Scourge Foundation for the purpose of fund-raising. In 1983 the Project was formally organized by the City to undertake research with particular emphasis on the raising and exhibition of the ships. There is a book about the two schooners by Emily Cain, Ghost Ships: Hamilton and Scourge: Historical Treasures from the War of 1812 (1983). As of 1997 there is insufficient funding to finance the raising of the ships.

The Hannah Street Methodist Church is believed to have been founded in 1892. It was later sold in 1929 and became a Baptist Church, then again in 1949 and became First Christian Reformed. First Christian renovated the building in 1953. It is located at 180 Charlton St. W. The original name of Charlton St. was Hannah.

Otto Hartmann, born perhaps around 1880, was a soldier in the Prussian Army during the First World War. Between March and October 1915, he served as a Vizefeldwebel [Staff Sergeant] with Landsturm [home defence] battalions, assigned to rear-guard duties with prisoners-of-war. At first he was stationed with 2. Companie of the 14. Landsturm Infanterie Ersatz-Bataillon at the Rennfeld prisoner-or-war camp in Münster. At the beginning of May, he was in Retowo in East Prussia, en route to Lithuania with 7. Companie, Halbbataillon Münster of the Landsturm Infanterie Regiment no. 1. Shortly, his company arrived at Rossienie [Raseiniai], staying there for several weeks. By the middle of July, Hartmann was attached to the Etappen of the Niemen armee [Army of ne Niemen]. His assignments took him west and north of Kovno [Kaunas], to Borki, Sredniki [Seredzius], Wilki [Vilkija], and Kieydany [Kedaniai], behind the operational front as it moved eastward. By mid-October, he had reached Janow [Jonava], north-east of Kovno. At this time some letters bore the stamp of 3. Kompanie of the Landsturm Infanterie Bataillon Schroda 1. Throughout these eight months, his wife Ada and their children Elizabeth, Fredy and Carl-Heinz lived in Minden, Westfalen [Westphalia], except for a period of time in the months of July and August, when they were visiting the family of Paul Voss in Solingen, Rheinland [Rhineland].

The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan was an ambitious program to train air crew members in Canada for the Allied war effort. An agreement by Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand on 17 December 1939 set up the program. In addition to those nations, Norwegians, Belgians, Dutch, Czechs and the Free French were trained.

Sgt. Haydon served with the Westminster Dragoons in Egypt in 1916-1917. He was wounded near Jerusalem in December 1917. In 1918 the Dragoons lost their horses, were reconstituted as a Machine-Gun regiment and redeployed to the Western Front. It was there that Haydon was killed on 20 October 1918 and eventually buried in the Harelbeke New British cemetery in Belgium.

The fonds contains information largely relating to George Alexander Hurst (1894-?) and his daughter Jean M. Hurst (1921-). After serving in World War One, George Alexander Hurst married Kathleen May Coutts in 1920. During the 1930s and 1940s he was the secretary of the On-to-the-Bay Association (now known as the Hudson Bay Route Association), an organization dedicated to the promotion of the Hudson Bay Railway as an efficient and cost effective means for western farmers to transport grain to Europe. Completed in 1929, the railway extended from The Pas to Churchill, Manitoba. He also worked on the National Harbours Board, a group responsible for the business and service operations of ports across the nation (it is now known as Ports Canada). Jean Hurst worked as a librarian at Mills Library from 1944 until 1987; her career as a McMaster librarian is documented in her unpublished manuscript, “A Librarian's Recollections Mostly of McMaster, 1944-1987.”

Eric Harry Hutcheson and Robert Bazett Hutcheson, two brothers who served in the armed forces in World War II, were the sons of Harry McCamus (a lumberman) and Laura Phyllis Hutcheson (née Bazett, daughter of a pioneer surveyor) of Huntsville, Ont. Trained at No.2 Air Navigation School, Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick, Eric Harry Hutcheson was a Flying Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He died on 11 February 1944 at the age of 23.

Born on 7 July 1918, Robert Bazett Hutcheson graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Trinity College, University of Toronto. From 1940 to 1945, he was an officer (achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander) with the Royal Canadian Navy on the HMCS Sherbrooke, HMCS Annapolis, HMCS Roxborourgh, and HMCS Kincardine. After the war, he returned to Huntsville and joined the family business, Muskoka Wood Products Ltd. He was the director of four different boards of the forest industry and served on other boards of a philanthropic and sport-related nature in the Huntsville community. He and his wife, Lecily, had three children. He died on 8 April 2004.

By 1870 there were thirteen other locals, stretching from Halifax, Nova Scotia to St. Catharines, Ont. The activities of the Canadian locals in the later part of the nineteenth century are well documented in the Iron Molders Journal.

Charles William Jefferys was born in England in 1869. He moved with his family to Canada around 1880. Jefferys had a long career as a newspaper, magazine and book illustrator. He also taught for many years in the Department of Architecture at the University of Toronto. His most well known work is the three-volume Picture Gallery of Canadian History (1942-1950). He died in 1951.

Evelyn Mae Kapitain was the sister of Charles G. Kapitain. Charles was born 15 August 1888 in Toronto, and served with the American Expeditionary Services (AEF) for two years during World War I. The AEF was created in May 1917 as an addition to the American force in France. Charles was a member of the 303rd Engineer unit of the AEF from May 1918 until 19 June 1919. The AEF fought two notable battles in France from September to October 1918: St. Mihiel, and the Battle of Argonne. These two operations saw the Allied forces recover more than two hundred square miles of French territory from the Germans.
